Our Focus

The Bureau of Justice reports that roughly 52% of state inmates and 63% of federal inmates reported have an estimate of 1,706,600 minor children under the age of 18. The incarceration rates of parents cause families and children great hardship as they try to build after the removal of a loved one. These families face extensive adversity when a family member becomes incarcerated, including depression, shame, tainted- reputation, and financial burdens. In addition, these families develop emotional and mental issues, lack support, and feel isolated from their communities.

There remains a lack of services for meeting the current needs of children with incarcerated parents. These children are constantly overlooked as currently, there are no government programs tailored to recognize the needs of children in this area or take responsibility for their future well-being. Therefore, children of incarcerated parents remain overlooked, and their needs remain neglected, leading to repeating incarcerated cycles and poor life outcomes.

How we plan to solve

We plan to create a positive atmosphere for the children of incarcerated parents by offering several different services:

  • Educational and goal support services

  • Peer support groups

  • 24-hour counseling services

  • Mentorship

  • Planned activities and outings

  • Relationship-building services

With these tools, we plan to allow children of incarcerated parents to develop productive growth and foster relationships amongst peers and adults to prevent the repeating cycle of generational incarceration.
